Re: Selling "Slabbed" Chips

Not to jump on the wagon and "pick" on Henry, but I do have somewhat of a cute story relating to Henry's abilities that I'm quite sure that Henry will also enjoy reaing when returning to this board.

I believe it was the second time I set up at the convention (Aladdin).

Prior, I first met Henry at a 1990 FUN Convention where I had introduced the Oostende and Dinant plaques and jetons that had recently became obsolete.

Initially, I was selling both sets at levels that no one on the floor turned down. In fact, I was selling the large blue 250.000 plaque for $50 each. Well, the following year rolled around and Henry returned to FUN with the same two sets unsold that I sold him the year before. I was also wholesaling these paques to other dealers in California at the time at $50 each...and of course, the prices started to jump as availability became less. In fact, I think it was one very well-known California chip dealer who was getting $135 for each plaque. I was happy to hear this, of course, because this was my new level; $135 for the 250.000 plaque.

Anyway, back to the Aladdin. During breakdown of the first day's set up, I asked Henry if he would consider selling me the two plaques I sold him, and his reply was yes, but I would have to pay him a $10 profit on each one. So, off rolled 120-bucks.

Both plaques sold the next morning for the going price of $135. Both buyers are now reading this, and two who were sitting at my table when the sale went down are now also reading this.

Unlike you, Jim, I never bought my first chip from Henry, but I sold him a hell of a lot of chips in the last 10-years and plan to do the same in the next 10-years....though he has been a little slow with me in the last two years. Hmmmm <G>

What does all this mean....it means what I've always told collectors: "Shop around." <G>
