I support the hobby by buying reference publications. The authors basically do these incredibility difficult, time comsuming tasks as a labor of love and not as a profit making business. You cannot get rich selling casino chip reference guides. I would guess that breaking even would be considered a success. I have both the TCR and the Official guides. They are very different and serve different purposes. I like both of them. TCR focuses on Nevada and is more authoritative (but has very few pictures of chips). The Official guide covers more areas than just Nevada, has pictures of many chips, but lacks the depth of information provided in TCR. I view the Official guide as more of a price list. TCR on the other hand is were you go to do your research. On pricing, the authors (or at least one of the authors) of the TCR stands by his published price ranges and has offered collections for sale at the TCR low price. The authors of the Official guide are more active in casino chip sales, but do not stick to their own price ranges. I wish that both publications continue to provide annual updates and I will continue to buy them. However, if I had to buy only one guide, it would be TCR. TCR is published by collectors, for collectors.
