... JB, though the logic has always escaped me. Actually, I think the usage has moved in the other direction for commas, at least where a single word is enclosed in quotes. I personally refuse to follow the convention and include the period inside the quotes only when I am quoting an entire sentence and the period is therefore part of the quotation.

Examples:

Patrick Henry said, "Give me liberty or give me death."

Babe Ruth was known as "The Sultan of Swat".
