Slabbing & Grading Casino Chips

Just thought I'd relay some information about "professionally graded" collectibles. In theory, it's suppose to help less experienced people and those purchasing by mail. In practice, it's an excuse for lazy investors with lots of cash and little knowledge to quickly jump into an established hobby.

Two major problems arise: (1) The grading of the item is arbitrary and depends more on the evaluator than on a set grading scale. (2) People quickly associate "slabbed" collectibles as being worth much more than "unslabbed" specimens.

I have seen, first-hand, a professionally graded baseball card received from the sports card hobby's established grading service at a grade of 8.5 be cut out of it's holder and resubmitted to the same grading service and come back a 9.5!

I have also witnessed new hobbists purposely avoid items that have not been graded and slabbed. This says more about their status as "investors" than "collectors".

Bottomline: The grading and slabbing of casino chips is unavoidable. There will be a market for it whether you like it or not. The only ones making a huge profit will be the company/group that establishes themselves as the premiere service. Is this just and fair to the hobby? No. Can it be stopped? No.

Every hobby has people who collect for the sheer enjoyment of the hunt and those who are Johnny-Come-Latelys with dollar signs in their eyes. Many times the lines of distinction are blurred since people upgrade items and resale the low-grade piece or pick up multiple copies to use as trade-bait later on down the line.

Who are the people who complain the most? Those long-time hobbists who've invested thousands of hours of their lives learning every detail only to see newcomers not care about an item unless it has been "slabbed" and graded 8.5 or better.

You can use your established CC>CC club to form a grading service with the money raised going toward advertising and promotion of the hobby and annual convention. It would also allow membership dues to be lowered. Someone's going to do it and profit from grading and slabbing chips. It might as well be an organization started to bring collectors together and promote the hobby than by a businessman who is just in it for the money.
