Re: THE PAL CHIP OPENS AT $1,250
In Response To: THE PAL CHIP OPENS AT $1,250 ()

Interesting, the seller runs a "coin club," and has this standard displaimer in his auctions. I particularly found it interesting where he says "in many cases the same coin can be worth more "unslabbed" than "slabbed"."

Coins offered by the Beverly Hills Coin Club (BHCC) are consigned by members for a 10% commission and by non-members for a 15% commission. All coins have a lifetime guarantee of authenticity, and authenticity has been verified and determined by our auctioneer. Grading, however, is highly subjective, and we make no guarantee of grading beyond our 7 day return priviledge. Most of our coins are graded by our consignors and then verified by qualified senior numismatists, who may differ from time to time in grading opinions. We recommend that all collectors use their own good judgement in determining the grade of a coin; taking strike, luster, toning and bagmarks into consideration and letting the price paid determine the final worth and quality of the coins purchased. Although consensus grading is employed by most grading services, it should be noted that grading is not an exact science. In fact, it is entirely possible that if a coin was broken out of a plastic holder and was resubmitted to another grading service or even the same service, the coin could come back a different grade. Grading services often employ by 3 to 4 people who may often disagree even amongst themselves. Ironicly, high prices are often charged to have a coin graded, but in many cases the same coin can be worth more "unslabbed" than "slabbed". This is partly due to the fact that grading services can overgrade as well as undergrade. Therefor, we offer no guarantee that grading services will differ from our own and we recommend that collectors save money by learning the art and science of grading for themselves.
