Re: Flamingo - Long Post

I have been in the Flamingo many times. Never gambled there as I was told by insiders " Not a smart place to gamble"

The sign outside said Flamingo. I have never heard any local refer to it as The Flamingo, Club Flamingo, or Flamingo Club. It was always called The 633 Club and that was what was on the chips. I have a nice error chip from there.

After the gambling closed in 1960, the mayor of Newport, "TV Johnny Pluso" ran a bingo in it. It was called TV Johnny's 633 Bingo. Federal agents closed it about 1964. Interstate transportation of gambling equipment ( bingo cards were bought in Littleton CO ) and fixed bingo games. There was about 6 bingos in the old gambing joints at that time. Yorkshire, Merchants, and Glen Schmidts among others. Everyone involved did a year and and a day.

The only one not raided was the one I ran in The Sportsman Club. We had our cards made in Louisville KY. Screw Andrews who was the owner of The Sportsman
( and on a small federally financed vacation in Terra Haute, IN at the time), insisted we have the bingo cards made in KY.

Screw came home and reopened a "Juice Joint" crap game in The Sportsman about 66. He also had plans to open the 633. Minor health problems so he checked into the Ft Thomas Hospital. Somehow he fell out of a 6th story window of the hospital. Screw was the only man I ever heard of that shot a newspaper reporter ( right in front of Glen Schmidts in full view of a crowd of people )and never did a day in jail for it. Screw was quoted as saying " He #####ed me off and I shot him in the ass"
