In the USA, there's at least one state that requires supplier identification on gambling implements, including chips -- either name/initials or a security-dot. I have seen more supplier names or initials on chips even in jurisdictions that don't require it. It helps in verifying who made a certain chip, because there may be more than one distributor of a chip mold over time. For instance, the Unicorn mold, distributed by Chipco, has also been produced by others I think (if I have my source info correct).
