Harris' heroics went for naught AGAIN ...

... as Fresno's quarterback shredded Cal's pass defense for more than 300 yards in the last 36 minutes of the game to lead his team to a 17-3 win.

Primarily because of the punts you mentioned, Cal started four first half possessions in Fresno territory and got ZERO points (also started one on the Fresno 19 after a muffed punt and managed not to score then, either!).

Besides distance and accuracy, Harris can also bring rain with his punts. One of them last night was caught ON THE FLY by one of our outside contain guys after the Fresno punt receiver ran away from it. On another, the outside guy was standing near the goal line when the ball bounced in front of him and zigged past him for a touchback. Until late in the first half, Fresno deepest penetration was their own 30 (!!).

The following paragraph from the game story on the Bear website pretty much sums up the frustrations of the evening:

>> The Bears had eight drives that moved into

Fresno State territory, but resulted in no points

and that proved to be the difference as the

Bears fell to 1-2 on the season. In the first half,

Cal's average starting position was the Fresno

State 49, but the Bears managed just a

25-yard Mark Jensen field goal in the second

quarter.

If Syracuse and Cal played this year, it would probably be a zero-zero tie in regulation and one of us would give up a safety in OT to lose 2-0!!
