Pete; Postage costs are the same whether a package is insured or not. For an additional .85¢ you can insure First Class up to $50 for loss or damage. For an additional .95¢ you can insure up to $100. Usually, I'll send packages that are less than $25 uninsured. I would never send a package worth over $50 uninsured to anyone.
