Maybe Dick Covington could tell for sure, but it looks to me like your scanner is set to scan in a limited number of colors. That would cause the hard lines between shades rather than a nice smooth graduated tone. My scanner software has the color settings, 16 colors, 256 colors and millions of colors. Try looking for a similar setting in your software and see if it can be changed to a higher number.
