Re: Racing form & other memories ...

Andy, A dentist friend of mine bought a horse about 15 years ago & wanted me to go in as a partner. I may be crazy but I'm not dumb. What he failed to tell me was that he had somehow arranged for the tatoo to be altered. The horse was run as a maiden, when in fact it was a stakes horse from Chile or Argentina. The first race was a $5,000 maiden claimer. On the morning of the race I was called & told to bring my mortgage to the track that afternoon. Morning line odds were listed as 99-1! I took a few dollars, cancelled my afternoon appointments & went off to Calder Race Course. My friend was very wise. He got Benny Greenstein, the only Jewish jockey at the track to agree to ride for him. I met my friend in the paddock & was told who would run 1st, 2nd & possibly 3rd. The odds never changed on that horse. I bet $20 to win & place, as well as the perfecta & trifecta 10 times. The horse went gate to wire & won by 8 or 9 lengths. I had the perfecta & trifecta tickets. That was the most money I had ever won gambling. The name of the horse was Manchon & I have the picture of me & my friend standing next to the horse in the Winners Circle. The next race, 2 weeks later, the trainer put the horse into a $12,500 claimer! The Form said he was outclassed & he went off at big numbers again, something like 60-1. I had him to win & place. Still a great payoff. Four races later & 4 wins in a row, the track officials get wind of what's happening, do some investigating & find out that the horse is a ringer. My friend & the trainer are arrested, the jockey is suspended, even though he had no idea what was going on, & I walk. I did have to pay the IRS that year, but my wife now wears the "Manchon Memorial Diamond" on her neck. I have no idea what happened to the horse, but I have a feeling I may have licked an evelope today, that had Manchon's genes on the flap! A true story!
