Hey Dave,

Try placing several sheets of white paper over the 3-D object that you are trying to scan. The sheets of paper (or material also works well), should cover the object as well as some of the glass of the scanner...

Also put the 3-D object close to the end of the scanner - yes the end opposite the hinge of the scanner lid... <VBG>
