Auction Shill Bidding -- Survey says ...

... some interesting things. Received 17 responses (too small a sample to draw any valid statistical conclusions, but I'll report the results anyway).

Major points:

A majority (10 of 17) of the respondents consider themselves at least part time dealers.

A majority (9 of 17) would participate in the type of auction described in Question #2, despite the permissible, unlimited use of seller or shill bidding.

Of the seven respondents who consider themselves solely collectors, a majority (4 of 7) would participate in the type of auction described in Question #2.

-------------------------

COMPLETE SURVEY RESULTS:

Question #1: Are you:

a --- a full time dealer in casino chips who is not also a collector.
b --- a full time dealer in casino chips who IS also a collector.
c --- primarily a collector who is also a dealer on a parttime basis.
d --- solely a collector.

Results:

a --- 1
b --- 1
c --- 8
d --- 7

-------------------------

Question #2: Would you participate in an auction if the auction venue's rules were as follows:

Minimum and reserve bids are not permitted; sellers may make an unlimited number of bids on their own lots, either directly or through a third party or shill bidder; if a seller's bid, either direct or through a third party, is the high bid, it is considered a completed sale and all appropriate fees (seller and buyer) must be paid to the auction venue.

Yes or No.

Results:

Yes -- unequivocal --- 7
Yes -- if disclosed -- 2

No --------------- 5
Hell no ---------- 1

No response ------ 1
Can't respond without more information --- 1

-------------------------

Question #3: Do you plan or expect to participate in the 2000 CC>CC Convention Auction?

Yes or No.

Results:

Yes ------------- 10
No -------------- 4
Maybe ----------- 1
Don't Know ------- 1
No Response ------ 1

-------------------------

Please note I did not attempt to tabulate the opinions of BB posters who did not respond separately to the survey. My impression (without going back to actually check) is that the anti-shill bidding sentiment was somewhat higher among the BB posting non-respondents to the survey than it was among the survey respondents.

Interestingly, three respondents said "No" to Question #2 and "Yes" to Question #3, and the one who said "Hell no" to Question #2 said "Don't Know" (which presumable means at least maybe) to Question #3. I will discuss the significance of these responses in my post on THE POINT of this entire exercise.

Thanks to all of those who took time to respond to this survey!
