Re: The Indians have a lot of arrows

Don,

You might find this interesting.

Back when the BB was being hosted on a server at Interland, I got an extremely NASTY email from them claiming that I had been responsible for a Denial Of Service Attack and that if it EVER happened again not only would they stop my service immediately, they would sue me and prosecute me.

This took me by surprise as I had no idea what they were talking about. They said the BB software had caused the problem and they disabled the software until I could show it wouldn't happen again. You might remember, this was one of the times that the BB was down for a couple of days.

I did all the investigating I could and finally found out what the problem was. It seems that when writing the BB index file, their server had failed to correctly write the End of File marker resulting in their server trying to read and write a 4 gigabyte file each time someone tried to read a message or return to the index file. <g> This brought the server to a standstill and eventually would cause a crash. I simply deleted the index file which caused it to be recreated correctly and the problem vanished.

I confirmed with the Systems Admin that this couldn't have been caused by my BB software because the system was responsible for basic file handling routines. Do you think I ever got an apology? No! That is why I moved the software from Interland and will never use their service again.
