Another counterfeit chip

We had some discussion a few days ago on known counterfeits. Here's a Desert Inn chip I've always assumed was a counterfeit, but I see TCR lists it as an Imitation Chip. I guess that's one term for a counterfeit, but I consider it collectible and value it considerably above an A value.

The center inlay is from the BudJones chip shown next to it. I don't know whether the Paul-son chip had a counterpart elsewhere. The inlays are obviously die-cut by machine and the insert is added very skillfully. You can feel with your finger that the inlay is a little too high, but even with a glass, the joint looks perfect. Why do you suppose someone went to the trouble to make these?
