That's a perfect example you've mentioned: "...the
old BPOE chips." From now on I'll use that example
as being a true Crest and Seal, as most of us have
seen these chips in the past and will be able to
relate. Nothing wrong with your "directions."
either...as long as you don't start using grid coordinants. <g>

(I once had a compass freeze-up on me in Frasier, CO.
at 52° below; no wind factor, either. Never trusted
them since.)
