Scanning chips/plaques

I want to scan my chips for insurance purposes. I'm not too worried about the modern casino chips, but can anyone tell me if scanning mother-of pearl gaming pieces will damage them? I'm concerned about the light of the scanner making them darken. Will it harm 100 year old European plaques? I see them scanned all the time on the board, but can't help but wonder if the bright light speeds up the breakdown process. Mine are already "bleeding" some. Don't want to add to the damage.

Anyone know?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Belinda :)
