My last try at explaining this in a way CHIP COLLECTORS should be able to understand. Let's say, Bob, that you have 1999 chips.

Is the next chip you obtain the last one of the first 2000 or the first one of the next 1000? If you answer that question logically (and honestly), you can arrive at only one conclusion about when the new millennium starts.

BTW, the discussion of -1 to +1 in modern mathematics is misleading, to say the least, and really has nothing to do with counting from a fixed starting point.
